Your first visit: what to expect

Your first visit is 60 minutes, one-on-one with me. Here’s what happens, so there are no surprises.

Before you come

  • Book online, or call or text me at (425) 954-3154.
  • No paperwork ahead of time. You’ll complete your intake forms at the start of your first visit.
  • Finding the clinic: 4464 Fremont Ave N, Suite 101, at the corner of N 45th Street and Fremont Ave N. There is covered parking as well as plenty of free street parking. The entrance is at ground level through the courtyard; Suite 101 is the first door on the left.
  • Wear comfortable clothes you can move in. Shorts are best for hips, knees and feet; a tank top or sports bra for shoulders, neck and upper back. Runners, bring your running shoes. Cyclists, bring your cycling shoes.
  • Bring any imaging reports, surgical notes, a list of your medications, and previous physical therapy notes if you have them. HSA and FSA cards are accepted.
  • No referral needed. In Washington you can see a physical therapist directly. If you plan to submit a superbill for reimbursement, check whether your plan requires a physician referral.

During the visit

  1. We talk. Your story: when it started, what makes it better and worse, what you’ve tried, and what you want to get back to.
  2. I look at how you move. Walking, squatting, reaching, bending, or running or riding if that’s your goal. This often tells me more than the painful spot does.
  3. I examine the area, and the areas around it. Gentle hands-on testing of joints, muscles and nerves. I’ll always explain what I’m doing and check what’s comfortable, and you can ask me to stop at any point.
  4. I explain what I think is going on, in plain language.
  5. We start treatment. Hands-on manual treatment begins in this first visit, and I teach you your home exercise program.
  6. We make a plan: what I recommend, roughly how many visits, and how we’ll know it’s working.

Will it hurt? The examination sometimes briefly reproduces your symptoms, because that helps me find the source. I keep it to what you can tolerate.

After the visit

  • Your exercises come through Medbridge, with videos of each exercise. If you prefer paper, I can send a PDF.
  • Questions between visits? Send me a message and I’ll reply by the end of the workday.
  • How many visits will I need? It depends on the problem. Because every visit is a full hour with me, with hands-on care such as joint mobilization, manipulation and dry needling, many patients need fewer visits than they expected. I’ll give you my honest estimate at the end of your first visit.
  • How we’ll track progress: we’ll pick a few concrete markers together, such as walking distance, pain on stairs, sleep or mileage, and check them as we go.

What if I’m not the right person for you? If your problem needs a different specialist, medical testing or a different kind of care, I’ll tell you and suggest who to see. You won’t be kept in treatment that isn’t helping.

Need to cancel? Please give at least 24 hours’ notice. Cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice are charged a $75 fee.
